I wasn't satisfied with the existing hymn versions I encountered, so I made my own. I omitted verses 5 and 6 for brevity.
I labored over whether to swap the lyrics in verse two, and eventually decided to proceed with the swap. For the hymn version, I also labored whether to include verse seven since it is not part of John Newton's original lyrics, neither is it an original part of the hymn it was first printed with in 1790, but I decided to include it for tradition's sake, even though for me it doesn't continue the themes of the previous 4 verses.
The folk tune has been published under various names as early as 1829. The first time the tune was paired with the lyrics for Amazing Grace was in 1835 under the name of New Britain, by which is it now most commonly known.
